Abstract: Aspects related to environment, health and safety are increasingly present and important in new products developments for the paints and coatings industry. The topic related to volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) emissions have undoubtedly been one of the most discussed themes for years. However, other topics related to environmental aspects such as renewable raw material sources, water and energy consumption are also emerging as a point to be considered when developing new products or replacing current raw materials.

Moreover, these new raw materials should contribute for formulating a coating with higher durability, increasing the time interval required for maintenance and consequently decreasing resource usage over time.
